1. Causes of linen damage

Before sharing how to maintain linen, let's first discuss the reasons why linen is damaged.

Washing Factor

  1. The feeding time is wrong during washing. Do not feed materials when there is insufficient water in the machine, especially bleaching chemicals. This will easily cause the detergent to concentrate on the linen, causing damage to the linen.
  2. Improper use of bleach. Laundries should use bleaching detergents with caution, especially bleaching powder (chlorine bleach). Improper use of temperature, use of too high a concentration, excessive residue after washing, etc. can cause discoloration or even holes in the linen.
  3. The linen is stained with corrosive chemicals. Among the various cleaning products used in hotels, some are corrosive, especially some strong acidic detergents, which are more harmful to linens. If the waiter accidentally touches the linen with corrosive detergent when tidying up or cleaning the room but does not clean it immediately, it will also cause local damage to the linen and deteriorate its fastness.
  4. Misuse of detergent. The detergents in the laundry room are all chemical products, which require certain knowledge, responsibility, and correct use. Otherwise, the detergents may be mixed incorrectly or even the wrong ingredients may be added, which may also cause damage to the linen.

Machine Factors

  1. The drum of the washing machine has burrs or some parts are not smooth, which may cause the linen to be scratched or worn during the washing process. The specific manifestations are yarn drawing, yarn following, and then small holes that appear and gradually expand.
  2. If the sorting work is not careful before washing, some sharp or hard debris will be mixed in, causing damage during washing.
  3. When loading or unloading the machine before and after washing, apply excessive force or encounter sharp objects to puncture or scratch it.
  4. When washing and dehydrating, the uniformity is not good, or the high-speed dehydration time is too long, which causes tearing due to mechanical force; or the washing time is too short and the number of times is too small, resulting in washing residue; or the washing procedure is defective and the residual alkali and residual chlorine are not neutralized and removed. wait.
  5. The quality of the linen itself and the storage environment are not up to standard. Cotton fabrics must be stored away from moisture, the warehouse should be well-ventilated, and the edges of warehouse shelves should be smooth. At the same time, the linen room should be protected from insect and rodent damage.

Precautions For Daily Washing Of Linen

  1. Remove the hotel linen and decorative items before washing, and choose a washing temperature of ≤40°C.
  2. Soak the hotel linen in water for a few minutes before washing. The time should not be too long to prevent the color of the hotel linen from being damaged. Note that pure cotton hotel linen with sweat stains should not be soaked in hot water to prevent yellow spots on the linen.
  3. After rinsing, you do not need to use a lot of water, but you need to wash it a few more times. You need to wring it out every time you rinse it. This will improve the washing quality of hotel linens.
  4. Hotel linen, no matter what kind of fabric it is, cannot be exposed to the sun to avoid damaging the dyeing and fabric. It should be dried on the opposite side in a ventilated and cool place.
  5. When ironing, the higher the temperature, the better. It should be noted that the material of the hotel linen adjusts the ironing temperature according to its performance. Generally, the ironing temperature is below 110°C.
  6. It is forbidden to mix and wash: it is forbidden to mix and wash bleached linen with colored fabrics, which may easily cause the dyeing of bleached linen.
  7. Washing temperature: Use soft water to wash below 50 ppm, and the washing temperature should not be higher than 60°C. It is recommended to use liquid materials.
  8. Avoid contact with chemicals; use oxygen, bleach, and detergent together. If you use chlorine bleach, soak the linen before use to avoid contact with strong acid, alkaline, and corrosive chemicals.
  9. Treatment method for stubborn stains: For stubborn stains, first soak in 40℃ warm water and corresponding detergent for 1-2 hours. It is prohibited to use chlorine bleach on colored linens.
  10. Classified washing: classify new/old, cotton/polyester-cotton linens, and towels.

3. Iron and dry until 100% dry (the dryness of linen in normal use is about 80%) to prevent the linen from turning yellow and moldy during long-term storage.

4. Do a good job of classifying old and new hotel linens. Natural damage and abnormal damage to old hotel linens should be treated differently. The length of the dehydration time of new and old hotel linens should also be different depending on their strength.

5. Avoid direct contact of cotton fabrics with strongly acidic or corrosive chemicals;

6. Be careful when transporting guest room linens to prevent secondary contamination and accidental tearing.

Towel Washing

1. Add in the main wash: all-purpose powder (washing powder), emulsifier, and color bleach.

2. Neutralize and add neutralizing powder and softener.

3. The drying time should not be too long, and the temperature should be controlled within 80°C. After drying to 80% dryness, use cold air to restore fiber elasticity.

4. The washing volume should be 70% ~80% of the machine's capacity.

5. When washing with water, the washing temperature should be controlled at around 60°C.

6. When the towel is passed through water for the first time, wash it at the medium water level at 70°C for 10 minutes, and pass it through the high water level 3 to 4 times.

Towel Washing Issues

1. Partial damage: chlorine bleaching agent is used, improper use, long washing time, tangling and tearing, the water level is too low, causing hard strain, dehydrator speed is too high, and the temperature during drying is too high.

2. Pilling: The loading volume exceeds the standard, the washing temperature is too high and the time is long, towels and bedding are washed together, heavy detergent is used, and the washing method is wrong.

3. Lint loss: insufficient water flow, direct drying with water, excessive washing load, long washing time, and excessive drying of fabrics.

Common disinfection methods for towels

The efficiency of hotel linen towels is very high, and customer requirements are also very high. Hotel linen towel products are used very frequently. There are four main ways to disinfect and clean hotel linen towels:

  1. Steaming method: Boil the towel in boiling water for about 10 minutes, then wash it with soapy water and dry it in a ventilated place before use.
  2. High-pressure steam method: Put the towel in a pressure cooker and heat it for about 30 minutes, which can kill most microorganisms, and then wash and dry it.
  3. Chemical method: Use chemical disinfectants for disinfection. You can choose a cleaning disinfectant diluted 200 times, then completely soak the towel in the solution for 15 minutes, and then wash and dry it.
  4. Microwave method: This method is to use a microwave. We first clean the towel according to the process, then fold it and put it in the microwave. It can be disinfected by running it for 5 minutes.

The above methods can be used to disinfect towel products, but repeated disinfection and cleaning will make the towels smell bad, harden, and become sticky, and their water absorption will also become worse. You can boil the towels in concentrated salt water or scald them with salt. Scrub, boil, and rinse with clean water to remove the odor and make the towel soft again.

Solutions To Common Towel-Washing Problems

(1) When towels are first put through water, wash them at a medium water level of 60°C for 10 minutes, and then pass them through high water levels 3 to 4 times.

(3) The drying time should not be too long. The temperature should be within 80°C. Dry it until it is 80% dry, and then use cold air.

(4) It is normal for new towels to have a slight lint when washed for the first time, and they will automatically fall off after multiple washes.

(5) Pay attention to the pH value when washing fabrics, and the alkalinity should not be too strong.

(6) The bleach should be bleached with oxygen and then neutralized with a neutralizer to reduce the content of acidic substances in the cotton fiber.

(7) Yukata and floor towels should be washed separately from square towels, face towels, and bath towels.

(8) Stubborn stains require manual treatment and strong washing, and other gentle washing methods are generally used.
