Types of Washed Cotton Fitted Sheet

There are fabrics available in the market for fitted sheet, organic as well as artificial. Picking up the right one might be difficult but you have to always consider your surroundings when it comes to the fabric of any bedding.

Cotton

Cotton is amongst the best of the lot and is preferred by most of the bedding makers. It is natural, soft, good on the skin, and comfortable. There are different types of cotton like Long Staple, Egyptian, Upland, Levant, and others.

01

Silk

Fitted sheets made from silk are suitable for cold conditions as they trap heat efficiently. The smooth texture of silk bed sheets is brilliant. However, wash care of the silk bedding can be expensive.

02

Microfiber

A synthetic material often blended with other fabric for softness has been a popular choice because of its cheap cost. Microfiber fitted sheets are lasting and easy to care for. But they are not good for people with skin sensitivities.

03

Linen

Although not as expensive as silk, linen is costly because of its value for strength and durability. It is cool and breathable with high absorbency. The softness of linen is pleasurable and feels gentle on the skin.

04

Tencel

Another popular fabric in the bedding industry is Tencel. It has gained popularity over the years because of the sustainable production, softness, and durability. Furthermore, Tencel offers hygiene because of its natural antimicrobial properties. Tencel is often mixed with other materials for improving its softness and comfort.

Folding a Washed Cotton Fitted Sheet

A common struggle people have when it comes to Washed Cotton Fitted Sheets is how to fold and store them. You may know the frustrating feeling - trying to neatly fold an unruly piece of material that's not a perfect rectangle and therefore getting any straight edges and folds seems completely impossible. While it may be easier to just roll it into a messy ball and shove it in the closet, here is an easy-to-follow step by step guide to beautifully folded Washed Cotton Fitted Sheets:

Grey Super King Fitted Sheet

Take a clean Washed Cotton Fitted Sheet and hold it up longways, with the opening facing you. Place your hands inside each of the two top corners.

Next, turn the corners inside out and place your hands inside them. Take the left corner and bring it over to the right corner, then flip it over the right corner. Make sure the seams are lined up and try to flatten out any major creases.

Grab one of the other two corners and place the first two corners inside it, then take the fourth corner, bring it over to the other three corners and flip it over them. All the corners should now be aligned and tucked into each other.

The final step is to flatten the sheet so there aren't any big creases in it, then fold it over in half or whatever your folding preference is so that it can be stored neatly in your linen closet without taking up too much room and be crisp and as wrinkle free as possible when unfolded to make the bed.

How to Pick the Right Washed Cotton Fitted Sheet

One of the main things to consider when shopping for a Washed Cotton Fitted Sheet is its size. As other bedding items, Washed Cotton Fitted Sheets come in twin, queen, and other sizes, however, don't forget about the depth of your mattress as well-this is especially important when it comes to air mattresses. Measure how deep you need the sheet to be, as they come in regular and extra-deep pocket sizes and you want to make sure that you get the correct size so that it fits tightly around the mattress and stays put.

Also consider the material of not just the Washed Cotton Fitted Sheet, but your entire sheet set, as the Washed Cotton Fitted Sheet is usually part of a set. A 100% cotton set is always a good choice, as is an Egyptian cotton one which will feel even softer, depending on thread count. If you're looking for a more breathable option, percale is an excellent choice that's lightweight and perfect for summertime.

How to Sew Your Own Washed Cotton Fitted Sheet

Measure the Mattress
For the best fit possible, measure your mattress before you start. Mattress sizes may have standard guidelines, but they do vary, especially when it comes to depth. Washed Cotton Fitted Sheet often come extra-deep to accommodate different mattress depths. You can do the same thing when making your sheets if you like, which is helpful if you plan on using them for different mattresses.

Measure the width, length, and depth of the mattress
Multiply the depth by two, add the width, and then add 6", which allows 3" to tuck under the mattress on each side.
Multiply the depth by two, add the length, and then add 6" to tuck under the head and foot of the mattress.

Cut Out the Corners
Cut the fabric to the dimensions you need for your sheet. Use a rotary cutter, ruler, and mat for accurate cutting. If you are using standard 45"-wide fabric, cut pieces to the length needed, then sew together along the length. You may want to add pieces to each side of one center piece to avoid having a center seam. Make sure to finish the seams so they won't fray and open up with repeated washing.

Sew the Sheet Corners
With right sides together, pin and sew the two edges together at the corners. This is called a boxed corner.
Finish the seam with a zig-zag stitch or a serger. Alternately, you can sew a french seam for a beautiful finish.

Press the Edges
Prepare to hem the edges of the sheet by turning and pressing 1/4" to the wrong side and then 1/4" again.
If you plan to add elastic only the corners, then stitch the hem all around the sheet. However, if you will be adding elastic around the entire sheet, it isn't necessary to pre-sew the hem.

Sew the Elastic to the Sheet
Insert a ballpoint or stretch needle in your sewing machine if you have one. It will help keep the stitches from skipping when sewing through elastic.
Use a zig-zag stitch to attach the elastic to the edge of the sheet, overlapping the inside fold of the hem. Be sure to backstitch at the beginning, then stretch the elastic as you sew.
Center each piece of elastic at the bottom of each boxed corner on the wrong side of the sheet. Stretch each end of elastic as far as it will go along the edge of the sheet. Use a zig-zag stitch to attach the elastic to the corners of the sheet, keeping the elastic stretched so that it will pull in the sides. Repeat on all four corners.

Finish Your Fitted Sheet
When the elastic is attached to the edge of the sheet and it's no longer stretched, it should have a gather to it like you see here. Having this all around the sheet helps hold things in place nicely.

Cover Your Mattress With Your New Fitted Sheet
Now that your sheet is finished, make your bed with your new homemade fitted sheet.

FAQ

Q: What is the purpose of a fitted sheet?

A: Sometimes called a bottom sheet, a fitted sheet is a special type of sheet that slips directly onto your mattress thanks to its elastic corners. A fitted sheet gives you a soft, comfortable base surface to sleep on, and its elastic corners ensure it stays securely on your mattress while you sleep soundly.

Q: Which sheet is considered as fitted sheet?

A: Styles. Bed sheets come in two main varieties: flat and fitted. A flat sheet is simply a rectangular sheet of cloth, while a fitted sheet has four corners, and sometimes two or four sides, fitted with elastic, to be used only as a bottom sheet. The fitted sheet may also be secured using a drawstring instead of elastic.

Q: What is fitted sheet look like?

A: You might be wondering, "What is a fitted sheet?" Known also as a bottom sheet, a fitted bed sheet can be easily recognized by its four elastic corners used to hug the perimeter of your mattress.

Q: Do you really need a fitted sheet?

A: It keeps your mattress clean, which is super important since you can't exactly throw your mattress in the washing machine. Offer a comfortable sleep surface. A good fitted sheet creates a soft surface for you to sleep on.

Q: Why not use a fitted sheet?

A: Often hotels use flat sheets as bottom sheets as it is easier to both iron and neatly fold a flat sheet than a fitted sheet and means that the housekeepers don't need to lift up the mattress to remove a fitted sheet as we do at home.

Q: Do I need both fitted and flat sheets?

A: Yes, traditionally, both top (flat) and bottom (fitted) sheets are used when making a bed. The bottom sheet, which is fitted, wraps around the mattress to provide a smooth, comfortable sleeping surface. The top sheet, or flat sheet, is placed between the sleeper and the duvet or blanket.

Q: Should I get fitted or flat sheet?

A: Flat sheets are meant to provide a layer of protection between you and your duvet cover. Fitted sheets are designed to fit snugly over your mattress and provide a smooth sleeping surface. They also protect your mattress from exposure to body sweat and oils, dust, and dirt.

Q: Do you sleep on fitted sheet or flat sheet?

A: The sheets are commonly referred to as the top sheet and bottom sheet in the set. The bottom, or fitted sheets go directly over the mattress, so they are the sheet that you lie on. The top sheet, or flat sheet, goes over you and under a duvet, blanket or comforter.

Q: Why do hotels not use fitted sheets?

A: Yes, hotels don't use fitted sheets! The reason? Elastic used in the corners of regular fitted sheets would deteriorate after weeks of daily, high-temperature laundering. Eliminating fitted sheets also reduces complexity: instead of separate flat and fitted sheets, hotel sheets are interchangeable.

Q: Why do hotels not use top sheets?

A: Wear and tear is not the only reason that hotels skip fitted sheets, they also opt out for inventory purposes-it's just easier to have flat sheets for everything-and for laundering. "With fitted sheets, they can't be pressed or folded, whereas with a flat sheet it's much easier," Shah said.

Q: How do I know what size fitted sheet to buy?

A: Remove any sheets from your bed and measure the width and length of your mattress. Then measure the height of your mattress, being sure to include any mattress toppers. Write these dimensions down. Your fitted sheet should match or be slightly larger than these dimensions.

Q: How much bigger should fitted sheet be?

A: It is best to buy your fitted sheet or mattress protector at least 2 - 3 inch (8cm) deeper than your mattress to allow for a good tuck in and avoid the common problem of your sheets coming off in the night. With our range of deep sheets, you'll easily be able to find the one thats perfect for your bed.

Q: Can you use a regular sheet as a fitted sheet?

A: Instead of a fitted sheet, use a flat sheet above the mattress. It is simple to fold and tuck the corners under the mattress to ensure it remains properly in place. In many luxury bedding ensembles, flat sheets are used instead of a comforter or a duvet cover.

Q: Does fitted sheet go on first?

A: Fitted:The fitted sheet is the first layer of bedding. The fitted sheet, complete with an elastic band around the edges, fits snugly on top of your mattress. If you have a mattress protector, it will go on top of that. The elastic prevents the sheet from coming off the bed in the middle of the night.

Q: How often do you need to change your bed sheets?

A: Is it okay to change your bed sheets once a month? While your specific sheet changing habits might vary a little bit depending on your lifestyle, your body, and your preferences, most experts agree you should change your sheets every week or every two weeks.

Q: What is a non fitted sheet called?

A: FLAT SHEET. A flat sheet is the largest piece of top fabric that doesn't require a precise fit like a fitted sheet, and floats over you as you sleep. Twin flat sheets fits both Twin and Twin Extra-long beds. Queen flat sheets fit both Full and Queen bed. King flat sheets fit both King and Cal-King beds.

Q: Why do hotels use 3 sheets?

A: Triple Sheeting: How to Make a Hotel Bed Without a Duvet Cover
Cleanliness: Hands down, the triple sheeting method lends itself to a cleaner hotel room. The top sheet can be processed and cleaned between every guest versus a quilted bedspread. Speed: While duvet covers are easily laundered, changing out the cover and processing it drive up the cost and time to change over a room.

Q: Why do hotels use percale sheets?

A: Hotels opt for a percale weave over sateen as percale epitomises the cool, crisp feeling typical of a luxury hotel suite. A percale weave is also naturally longer-lasting as by definition, it's a tighter weave (one under, one over - in comparison, sateen is typically three over, one under).

Q: Do hotels really change sheets between guests?

A: Do hotels change sheets between guests? Yes, and-in the past-they changed sheets and towels every day. Always check the sheets before you settle into a room and make sure they are not wrinkled or look slept-on.

Q: How often should you wash your sheets?

A: Washing your bed sheets about once a week ensures they always stay fresh. Add this task to your weekly cleaning schedule to help reinforce the habit. Keep in mind that you don't necessarily need to wash sheets the same day as you strip your bed.
